West Virginia State University, or WVSU for short, is a historically black public college in Institute, which is an unincorporated community on the Kanawha River in Kanawha County, in the US state of West Virginia, situated off of Interstate 64 and West Virginia Route 25.
WVSU was established in 1891 and it is one of the original 1890 Land-Grant colleges and the smallest land-grant institution in the country. It is often referred to as simply `State` or `West Virginia State` and it refers to itself in its motto as `A Living Laboratory of Human Relations`.
West Virginia State's athletic teams are known as the Yellow Jackets and they compete in NCAA Division II, in West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. Their distinctive colors are black and gold.
Among WVSU's noteworthy alumni, there are: Will Robinson - first African-American to coach Division I basketball, and first to be NFL scout, Lou Myers - actor and theatrical director, played Vernon Gaines in A Different World, Earl Lloyd - first African-American to play in the NBA, and Antoine Fuqua - writer and director of various movies including Training Day, starring Denzel Washington.
